Religious Studies Minor
The purpose of the academic study of religion is to examine and analyze religious beliefs and practices within their cultural, political, and historical contexts. As such, religious studies is interdisciplinary at its core. Moreover, a firm grasp of religion, as it is expressed through and in various cultural artifacts in different times and places, is crucial to an overall understanding of human beings and human societies in the past, present, and future.
The Religious Studies minor emerged out of conversations with faculty in several departments who felt that this minor could be supported with existing courses and would be of value to students pursuing and attaining it. In particular, the minor will of great use to students going into non-profit jobs, ministry, politics, and global business.
It is an interdisciplinary minor housed in the Philosophy department with participation from departments across the College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences. A total of 18 credits are minimally necessary for graduating with a minor in Religious Studies.
9 of the 18 credits must be upper-level courses (3000 and higher); there is one required course (PHIL 1100) that is strongly recommended to be taken early in the student’s coursework. The remainder may be chosen from the following list of approved courses for the minor, at least nine of which must be upper division. And no more than 12 credit hours (excluding the required course) may be taken with only one department.
The Religious Studies minor requires a minimum of 18 credit hours of course work and a minimum of 9 credit hours of upper-division (3000+ level) course work. No more than 12 credit hours (excluding the required course) may be taken within only one department. All courses must have a C or better grade.

Asian Studies Minor
The Asian Studies program serves as a base and resource for those engaged or interested in the study of Asian cultures, languages, or thought at UCCS. Through our research, teaching, and service, we aim to facilitate and expand comprehension and appreciation of Asian artistry, culture, geography, history, philosophy, and politics. As an intellectual community, we construe the concepts of “Asia” and “Asian diaspora” broadly and critically, opening the program to a wide variety of cultural perspectives while also emphasizing the need for awareness of the differences among the regions of the continent, as well as the roughly 4.5 billion people who live there.
REQUIRED COURSE FOR THE MINOR
-
At least 18 credit hours of coursework total, with a minimum of 9 credit hours of said course work being upper division (3000+ level). No more than 10 credit hours from a single department can count toward the minor. Students must earn at least a C grade in each course taken toward the minor. Courses taken pass/fail cannot count toward the minor. For completion of the minor, students will submit a portfolio of papers or projects from relevant courses to the director, as well as a reflection statement elaborating how their coursework has provided a broader understanding of Asian history, geography, and culture broadly construed.
